under "View network computers" in the "My Network Places" in the "Control Panel" (windows xp) - there is an unauthorized computer - probably just borrowing wi-fi connection - but how do i boot them if i want to? i can't seem to boot them off
i'm hoping they do not have allowance to peruse my HD...

you should contact your network provider and have them put an encription code to your ip address so that no outside lines can tap onto your local area connection.

If you have a wireless notebook, download and install netstumbler. You should be able to easily find this unauthorized computer by walking around with the notebook watching the signal strength. We had an unauthorized system on our wireless network that was set up as an improperly configured DHCP server. A handful of computers had no connectivity because they were hitting the rogue DHCP server before the real one. We were able to trace this machine with netstumbler.

you really should protect your network by either adding an accepted list of users (by MAC address) or by creating a WEP that would be typed into each computer you want to use the network. this is all done at the router level. ever logged into your router? try opening a browser and typing 192.168.0.1. logins are usually admin with password admin. you can also search the web for your router and find specific instructions on how to configure it to be safe.
