The discharge you have in the morning after sleep is from your eye and tear ducts cleaning out over night. It usually consists of mucus and dried tears which is what gives it the gooey/crusty characteristic along with being off-white or yellowish.

Experiencing increased eye discharge during the day is usually a sign of allergies or can be a sign of illness (like a cold) from bacteria in your mucus.
