Recently adopted a 1 year old lab mix from the dog pound. Wonderfull dog, smart, loving couldn't have asked for a better pet, just love him to death. I have two chihuahua's and they play with him and lay on the blanket with him , no real problems except for occasional jealousy. However, I have a cat, poor thing has not come out of the bedroom in 2 weeks, the new dog will growl and chase her. I have tried to introduce them on several occasions, but neither one is being very friendly, hissing, growling. I even thought of putting the cat in her carrier and leaving it in the living room to see if that works. Any suggestions?

We have three dogs and eight cats, some of the cats play with the dogs, and others hiss. Much depends on the cat personality. But you need to take control of the lab. You need make it clear that you are the leader of the pack and that the pack includes the cats. The dog can be trained to not chase the cat, but you have to be very firm. We trained an adult Chow mix (from the pound) to live with cats by leashing the dog when not home, and being very discplined about controlling the dog when of the leash to not chase the cat.
good luck.

My cat did the exact same thing but I left the bedroom door open during the day when I was home and one day at a time he peeked out and came even further eventually he was in the living room around the dogs (yeah he did run back in the room a few times) but when he found out the dogs weren't going to hurt him he came out on his own and became part of the family... also once he was out a bit I picked him up and held him let him sniff the dogs and that helped to but he will come out when he feels safe ... good luck

Have you ever seen Ceaser "The Dog Whisper" on National Geographic Channel?

He has helped somebody with that same problem. You can get his first season shows on DVD at Amazon.com

That would be a great help for you.

In the mean time, put your dog on the leash and let him know that chasing/growling at the cat is not allowed. You need to nip this behavior in the bud before it esculates.

Good Luck!!

Also, contact area shelters/rescue groups and ask them how they would do it.

eliminate the cat, she sucks, in basic terms kidding, after I were given my cat we had to shop her interior the laundry room with the door close for like a pair days, my dogs turned right into a doggy so he became sniffing and leaping throughout her, then after he were given used to the scent, we may allow her out and they could play, yet then like after a week or 2 they in basic terms coexisted, so i'd in basic terms allow them get comfortable with one yet another and time will tell.
