Percentage questions are always a little rough, until you figure out how to decipher them.
1: In a class of 35 students 8 were on the honor roll. What percent of the class were on the honor roll? a) 20% b) 23% c) 28% d) 30%
The actual question is "8 is what percent of 35." You can solve this by setting up an equation like this:
8 = 35x
8/35 = x
You can then convert the fraction to a percent by dividing out then moving the decimal point two to the right and slapping a percent sign on the end.(multiplying by 100%/1). Since 8/35 is about 0.228, you can select the right answer from the ones given.
2. Which of the following is not equal to the rest: 20%, 1/5 ,.2, .02, 20/100 ?
This is a simple unit conversion problem. In order to solve it, you need to get everything looking the same. The easiest way to do that is to convert the decimals to fractions with a denominator of 100. Since the expression "x%" pretty much means "x/100", the 20% is easy to convert: 20/100, which happens to be another choice, and so it is not your answer.
To get 1/5 expressed as x/100, you'd have to multiply both the numerator and denominator by 20 (because 100/5=20; we can do this because 20/20 = 1, and any number times one is that number, or x*1=x). This gives us 20/100 again.
The next choice is 0.2, which converted to a fraction is 2/10. This time, multiply the fraction by 10/10 (because 100/10 = 10), giving us 20/100 again.
That leaves 0.02 as the correct answer by elimination, but is it? 0.02 = 2/100, which does not match the others.
3: A man spent 25% of his income for food, 20% for shelter, 15% for clothes, 20% for savings and insurance, and 12% for advancement. What percent remained to be spent on miscellaneous items? a) 5% b) 6% c) 7% d) 8%
The key to this problem is that the man's entire income has been set equal to 1 (100%). This means we can add all the knowns together, and subtract from 1 to see what he has left to spend.
25+20+15+20+12 = 45 + 35 + 12 = 80 + 12 = 92
100-92 = 8%.
4: Mary received a test grade of 80% on a 15-problem test. A problem was either correct or incorrect. How many problems did Mary solve correctly? a) 9 b) 10 c) 12 d) 14
This problem is also pretty easy to set up. The unknown is correct answers. The percentage of correct answers is 80%, so:
(80%)*15 = x
(15)*(0.8) = x
12 = x
5: A new car cost $2400. At the end of a year it was worth $1920. What percent of the original cost of the car was the loss? a) 15% b) 25% c) 30% d) 20%
That's a cheap car. We want to find the loss (L) as a percent (x) of the original price (O), which is easy...
Ox = L
x = L/O
But, unfortunately, they don't give us the loss. So we must find it. This takes some common sense: the amount of Loss is the Original price less the new Value.
L = O-V
We can substitute that in to the original equation...
x = (O-V)/O
and solve.
x = (2400-1920)/2400
x = (480)/2400 {divide by 10/10}
x = 48/240 {divide by 24/24}
x = 2/10 {Convert to decimal}
x = .2 = 20%
6: In buying a refrigerator costing $250, a down payment of 15% must be made, the rest to be paid in installments. What is the down payment? A) $25.50 B) $32.00 C) $37.50 D) $40.00
Cutting out all of the extra information, we find that the Down Payment (D) equal 15% of the Price (P). We also know P=250
(0.15)P = D
250*(0.15) = D
D = 37.50
7: A real estate agent is paid 5% of the first $10,000 of the sales price of a home, and 3% on any amount in excess of $10,000. What is the agent's fee on a home sold for $18,000? A) $740 B) $500 C) $670 D) $800
This one can be a tough one to set up.
We know that the guy gets 5% on the first $10,000. A little quick math tells us that that is (10000*0.05 = )$500. So he gets 500 plus whatever he makes on that rest of the sale (x). Since he's already been paid for the first 10,000, we need to get rid of it.
(18,000-10,000)*(0.03) = x
8,000*(0.03) = x
240 = x
240 + 500 = $740 commission.
8: The population of a city in 1940 was 60,000. In 1950 it was 67,500. What percent of the 1940 population was the increase?
A) 9 1/2% B) 12 1/2% C) 15% D) 17 1/2%
What percent of 60,000 is {the increase from 60,000 to 67,500}?
Or, what percent of 60,000 is 7,500?
7,500 = 60,000x
75/600 = x
3/24 = x
0.125 = x
12.5% = x
9: The Phillies won 89 games and lost 58. To the nearest tenth of a percent, what was the percent of games won?a) 55% b) 60.5%
c) 65.5% d) 53.5%
Percent of games won (x) is the number of games won (89) divided by total games played (89 + games lost).
89/(89+58) = x
89 / 147 = x
x = 60.5442
Since the answer is to the nearest tenth of a percent, the answer is 60.5 %
