My husband, daughter, and I would like to go on a weekend trip this spring. We live in Mobile and don't want to drive more than a few hours to get where we are going. We like sightseeing and staying at bed and breakfast inns. We are looking for vacation ideas other than going to the beach because we visit the beach often.

I tell you what is a fun trip...Chattanooga. We went there for Spring Break two years ago and had a blast. Lots of things for both kids and grownups and the scenery is beautiful.

Why not explore the rest of your state? There are a lot of fascinating places in northern Alabama, which is just a few hours from Mobile. The mountains east of Birmingham and Huntsville are gorgeous and in quaint old towns like Tuscumbia (where I'd suggest you tour Helen Keller's home) you are likely to find the kind of bed and breakfast you are looking for.
You might also go over to Mississippi or Louisiana and explore some of the antebellum homes or plantations. The Natchez area is especially lovely. You might also want to see Audubon's home near St. Francisville, Louisiana.
Then, of course, there's always New Orleans, which is crying out for tourists as they struggle to rebuild. Prices are down, and the main tourist areas were not seriously damaged. There are lots of B&Bs in the Crescent City and plenty of things to see.

Penscola, Florida has lots of interesting stuff
Montgomery, Alabama too is interesting in the spring time.
After Katrina, the gulf coast is not a pleasure visit.
Callaway Gardens in Georgia is great if you like azeleas and golf. Pine mountain Ga alos has lots of interesting things, but probably not for a young girl.
