On the Paul Finebaughm show, a caller alleged that Alabama football coach Nick Saben's atheism is unquestioned. That issue was entertained, but not taken seriously on this forum. Some are asking whether it matters. Of course it matters. We cannot have a religious litmus test for staff at public universities, but Athletic Director Mal Moore should want not only a winning coach but also someone who will be a good moral influence upon college students. Very little is more important in this life than a strong moral compass. Those who deny the existence of God also reject the author of truth. Rejecting God leads to the rejection of moral truth so evident in our perverse society. I'm thrilled about Nick Saben go to the Tide, but I would love to hear conclusively that the atheism rumor is untrue. It does matter because he stands to have such a strong influence on students. As for those of you deny God's existence, God doesn't believe in athiests (Romans 1).

You seem so narrow-minded as to think that atheists do not have a strong moral compass. What about Ted Haggard, Mark Foley, Jim Baker, and Jimmy Swaggart? They seemed to have good morals at first, but then their dirty little secrets got out. Many scientists are atheists who have discovered cures for horrible diseases, Bill Gates is probably atheist yet has started his own charity to help Africans and the AIDS fight, and countless other atheists and agnostics have fought for morals, NOT religion.
Many of your so-called "great" mega preachers do only for themselves. They own mansions, jets, huge wardrobes and megachurches, and yet have no problem taking money from some of the poorest people in their congregation, promising that "God will pay them back". The arrogance is some of the worst I've seen.
Now compare the atheists and the Christians that I gave an example of, and tell me, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE LATELY FOR YOUR FELLOW MAN?

So anyone who is an atheist is also not good morally? That is an interesting theory. Do you want me to start presenting names of the "Christians" who were very terrible moral influences? I don't care if he is an atheist or not. That will be between him and God, and yes it WILL even if he doesn't believe that. I'm sure he will make his appearances in Church every Sunday as a good 'Bama coach must.

are you kidding me. Who cares if he doesn't believe in god he is a good coach and should have gotten the job. I think it is unfair when the coach of a team forces his players to prey before a game that's alot more harmful then not beliving in god. At least Nick wont try to change the players minds.

Ok i would like to start by saying that i grew up in the church, which doesn't mean anything, but i am a christian that struggles but i hold my own in my religion. BUT, just because someone does not believe in god does not make them have bad morals! that is ridiculous, not to be rude but morals come from the people who raised you. that i was raised in the church yes my morals mostly come from them but a lot come from my neighbored. i have many Friends who do not believe in god and they are some of the greatest role models i have ever seen. so before you judge a book by its genre you need to at least read the 1st page! one last thing it is a public school religion has no effect in side those doors.

They can't make a hiring decision based on his religious beliefs.
I do not believe that it has ever stopped him from winning games, which is his job.
I have never heard that Nick Saben is an immoral man, atheist or otherwise.
I think it is not a good idea to believe that someone is immoral because their religious beliefs are different from yours.

of course,...... it doesn't matter
if it matters to you don't send your kids to play for Alabama that is the only part you get a say in
(why was this posted in football, it should have been posted in religion/spirituality, it has nothing to do with football)
