I have a large image and want to place some smaller images on top where I have some unimportant space. I see the table method where the large image would be the background...but the large image also has an image map on it for links.

The best thing to do is probably to edit your image to include the smaller image and go on using an image map. If your smaller image need to link somewhere, you can use that same image map to do it.

However, it is possible, but only if your html page has width and height constraints.

Here is how you can get it to work if you big image is the top/left most element of your page.









If the big image is not the top/left most element, you can try something like the following:
