My fiance and i have been together for over 4 years now. We got our dog Daisy about 2 years ago. I believe our relationship is about to end soon. We both love the dog very much, almost like a child. Because of this, both of us are going to be very unwilling to leave her. Please help!

We won't be able to take turns taking care of her. I will be moving over 300 miles away.

Joint custody. It's what's going to happen if neither one of you want to give her up. One week with you, one week with him, until one of you gets tired of doing this.

Personally, and a lot of people will disagree with me on this, if you think he will fight for it, I think you should let the dog go. A dog is replaceable. Everyone thinks that it is not, and it is true that you'll always love THAT dog, but you can love another dog just as much. What you cannot change is the pain and stress and suffering you will put yourself through if you fight. You say you are moving far away, so co-custody is not going to be feasible. This will also aggravate the stress that fighting for the dog will cause.

If you can convince him to give up the dog, then wonderful. I am NOT suggesting just giving up if you can win. But if it is going to be a big fight, it is likely not going to be worth it... especially when you consider all the poor puppies in the pound waiting for a new home. Your ex-fiance's gain can be YOUR gain, too! So break up. Ask for the dog. If you can get it, fine. If not, cut your losses. Destiny and the perfect pet may be only a quick visit to a breeder or shelter near you!

Whatever you decide, good luck! Obviously no one can truly make this decision except for you. I just wanted to provide you with a different point of view. I do not think you are in the wrong to fight for what you love, but it could be a really nasty fight.

p.s. The person above who argues that you should do what is best for the dog has a very good point, too!

Almost like a child, possibly joint custody with visitation rights. Stop by and take the pooch to park. Fatten up with treats so the dog likes you better than the ex. Good Luck.
Years ago, the same thing happened to me. I negotiated for the dog by giving up a set of brass fire place tools. Best deal I ever made, Dog lived to fifteen, and was a wonderful companion that became part of the family when I got married.

Let the dog choose. Have someone hold the dog in the middle and the two of you get on both side of the dog and call the dog and the first person the dog comes to, gets to keep the dog. There is always visitation.

Forget about what you or your soon to be ex want....the only thing that should matter is what is best for the dog...who will have the better residence for the dog? (Access to a yard, etc), Whose schedule is more condusive to spending alot of time with the dog? If you both really love this dog like a child you will decide based on whats best for it, not whats best for you.

Share the dog ... Let her live both places. One have her for six months and the other the next this way it is fair and you both have a chance to be with her and love her. This is also fair to Daisy. It sounds like you noth love her very much. Sharing is the answer here.

Who does the dog like more? They usually have a favorite. Let the dog choose and you will be less likely to have hard feelings over it.
