but I read that the rice sometimes goes on fire inside the material. I don't know if anyone has ever had that happen or do you have any other ideas to fill the pad with?

I wouldn't worry about it. I would think you would have to microwave it forever to get it to catch fire- way past what you would need or use.

I have several pads that are just essentially rice filled tube socks and they work fine.

This article:

talks about preventing the pads from burning.

It also suggest some scented oils or herbs which sounds interesting.

My husband is a massage therapist and swears by home-made heating pads. He uses dry beans in his. As long as you don't leave them in the microwave for an extended amount of time, you have nothing to worry about. They stay hot for a long time. If you want, you can mix in different scents with your beans.

I have one with rice and one with corn. Never caught fire. I have also washed them many, many times without problems. I think they are wonderful!
