A freshwater "tropical" tank is essentially just the temperature, being over about 75 degrees or so. Generally the late 70s-80s. The kind of temperatures that coldwater fish such as goldfish would be damaged by (it speeds up their metabolism and makes them sick).
The temperature that the tropical tank is set at depends on the tropical fish that it's housing, some like it warmer some a little cooler. Tropical tanks have heaters, coldwater tanks do not. And in some cases a coldwater tank could need a chiller (which are a LOT more expensive than heaters!).
There are also tropical and coldwater Saltwater tanks. If you wanted a warm-water reef biotope that would be tropical, but if you wanted to have creatures found in say, UK waters, that would be coldwater and may even need a chiller for them to thrive.

It is the temperature. You can have a tank full of nothing but water and it is a tropical tank if it is the right temperature. Tropical is a term used to define a certain portion of the earths surface, centered on the equator and between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. Most people use the term "Tropical Aquarium" to mean that they keep fish commonly found in this zone, but that's not always the case. Many aquarium fish are actually from sub-tropical areas.

A tropical freshwater tank holds tropical fish and is kept at a certain temperature, usually around 78-80 degrees F. Here's a list of some common tropical fish: http://www.tropicalfishdata.com/freshwater_species_2.html
In contrast, a coldwater tank is just that--a tank that is not heated to tropical temperatures. A common fish to include in a coldwater tank is a gold fish.

There are fresh water tanks and Salt water tanks. If you are buying freshwater tropical fish then you could call it tropical. If you want saltwater fish, you need to go to the pet store and ask for help, you have to use the right kind of salt and fish and things they can help you.

I couldn't tell you a thing about what would work because "several cichlids" means absolutely nothing. Only rift lake cichlids come from high ph water. They range from an inch long to a couple of feet long and they can be very peaceful or extremely hostile. What kinds of cichlids do you have?
