Personally, I thought it was well done, but I did think the ending where the two boys dance together in the street with the neighbors looking on was intended as a fantasy. I find it hard to believe that they could do that in a working class neighborhood without being harassed, or chased down and beaten. Or is London that liberal all over? I thought the mum was a saint for being so accepting (of both boys and their relationship) and for being so determined to make a better life for herself and her son.

I should add that a local movie critic here in the US said that the boys became gay because they were "bored." He was roundly chastised for his blatant ignorance.

Although I did enjoy some aspects of the film I was somewhat disappointed with it as a whole. I thought the coming of age and identity between the two boys was poignant but the story suffered from side-tracking. For example the mother's unexplained loathing for the teen-aged girl living next door was irrelevant to the movie. Another issue that made it difficult for me to follow the story properly was the heavy cockney accents in the actors' speech. Hard to understand. Overall I thought it was mediocre compared to other movies made with the same intentions.

I agree the ending was a bit "that'll never happen" but apart from that I enjoyed the film. In fact I have it on DVD.

The other films I've also enjoyed with a gay theme were Jeffrey, I was very impressed with the acting of Patrick Stewart and suprised as well. The other was But I'm a Cheerleader, that wasn't bad for a low budget film but totally unrealistic.

Given that the film is set in Thamesmead, a notorious centre of BNP activity, the scene you describe is far from realistic but that's artistic license for you! Still, a very sweet ending if my memory serves me well.

Three cheers for working class gay youth!!

I think the movie was good. So what if the movie's ending was a bit unreal but I bet it is what most of us wish could happen. It' a feel good movie that gives gay people hope, in a way. it can distract us from our bad experiences and we can sit there and say "what would it have been like if it was like that for me" or "I wish that could happen to me."

I loved the end. Not only did it show that they had finally given into their love for each other, but the mom had accepted tghem as well... Interesting that the guy with brown hair (don't feel like loooking up his name) has spent the rest of his career trying to prove how very straight he is... The two guys in the movie hated each other in r/l....
