You have to look at the subject from all the different points of view available and weigh up the pro's and cons of these points of view in an objective way as possible.

Imagine you're a lawyer, presenting your case to court (e.g. 'I accuse the Americans of having been instrumental in the Allied Victory in 1945'). Put down the evidence that backs up your view.

Then take the view of the opposing lawyer. How will they try to discredit your argument? What will they argue?

Then work out how you will triumphantly show their arguments and evidence to be flawed! How will you convince the jury?

If you imagine an essay like this, it will mean you really think about the opposing views. It's difficult to write a 100% balanced agument (because everyone has an opinion on everything!), but if you convince yourself that you're fighting a court case etc it might make your arguments more convincing.

Writing a Balanced Argument

It is important that we can express our opinions in a balanced and calm way. If we don’t people will not take us seriously.

Use the following structure to help you write a balanced essay on the subjects of either capital or corporal punishment. (Remember which is which! You don’t want to hang people for not doing their homework!)

“It is about time we brought back capital/corporal punishment”. Do you agree with this view?

·Explain what the term capital punishment or corporal punishment means.

·Explain the views of people who agree with the subject.

·Explain the views of people who disagree with the subject.

first, the essay must have a neutral point of view

As you gather information, remember that you should consider both sides of the question thoroughly before deciding which side to support. Whichever side you choose, you should understand the views of the opposing side. Presenting both sides of the argument shows that you are knowledgeable of both sets of views and that you are willing to consider the opposing viewpoint and find evidence to refute it.

In making your argument, you should also supply the context of the sources of all your information. For example, paper bag companies, plastic bag companies, and environmental groups have their own agendas in mind when they present information to the public. Consider the source of all information.
then, in a single sentence, summarize the goal of this step. Describe at least one issue in the paper-versus-plastic debate from both sides of the argument.

Don't inject your opinions. Consider both sides of the arguements. Seek out sources that support both sides and give both sides equal time or space in your presentation. Leave it so that they readers can make up their own minds based on the information that you have provided.
