I don't use my machine barely at all. When I went to use it for the first time in a year the foot was gone. (knocked off? kids playing?) I found a foot and managed to attach it, but the needle is hitting into it with every switch. Did i install the foot wrong? is there a switch that I need to fiddle with? Or is something more seriously wrong?
Anyone with advice would be appreciated.

This was happening to me as well and yes my kids played with it too!. i played with the needle position knob and it did no good at all it is still doing it. I recommend either getting a new sewing machine or having this one repaired.

Needle hitting machine means:
1. The needle is bent
2. Your stitch type is set on zig zag and the stitch width isn't wide enough
3. Possibly the presser foot isn't attached correctly or is damaged

I'd start with "needle bent" and work my way through to the other two possibles. Failing that take the machine to the shop and have it looked at.

Usually on a sewing machine, there is a "needle position dial". When you move the dial, the needle moves to the left or right in very small increments. Mine is on the top of my machine, but it depends on what model you have. If you can move your needle, it will probably stop hitting the presser foot. Good luck!

your needle is in backwards, there is a right and wrong way to put them in, its not the presser foot along as the part is installed vertically square to the needle. pay attention to the pressure on the feed thread, too much will screw up the needle also

Try replacing the needle, if it is bent even a little it will hit the foot.

You may need to change your stitch setting, from zig-zag to straight and you may also need to put a diffrent presser foot on. There are many diffrent kinds of feet and stitches.
