Online discussion groups about the type of literature you are interested in. There are excellent ones like child_lit and another one for fiction.

I like to go the bookstores, browse the new releases, and write down the titles of whatever looks interesting. I borrow it from the library, and if I like it a lot, I buy a copy to read again later and loan to family and friends.

I also recommend looking at the book blurbs on the back covers and flaps of books you do like. Publishers usually get similar authors to review each other's work. For example, if you like John Grisham, you'll like John Lescroart.

Librarians are good sources of book recommendations, too. They know what circulates frequently, and which books are similar.
