the grange: why won't old solutions to farm problems work in the present(1889)?? list some problems that existed and solutions.

Actually it is because the main problem was lack of established borders between properties and the cattlemen would let their cattle graze freely often damaging crops. That problem was solved by "the Devils' Hatband" aka Barbed Wire. Farms used organic means to grow crops it wasn't until the early 1920's that pesticides were introduced as well as crop rotation to improve farm production. Farms still suffered concerns of drought and frost are still the biggest enemies of the farmer.
