Economically speaking? Cell phones enable communication on a mass scale. They would have good or bad effects depending on the information being exchanged.

Sports scores = Good
Stolen credit card numbers = Bad

The easiest way to look at an impact on the future is to look at the past. The telephone is relatively new, and the TV even newer. Look to see the effects of both of those communication tools, and you will see the effects that other mass communication tools can have.
