I went to a lecture the other night to see Jaime Hernandez, one of the creators of Love and Rockets. After the lecture we went to see an exhibit of his work. And there's music blasting: X, Iggy, Pistols, Clash, etc. And I'm standing there thinking, 'Man, this music is so great. Haven't played it in a while, miss it. It's still so great.' It felt so good hearing it. I wandered around with a smile, humming along to some of the stuff. And then i think, 'Kids these days have no idea what real punk is...' And then it hits me... punk is my oldies!!! NOOOOOO!!!

I had that 'this is oldies?' feeling the first time I heard Van Halen on the classic rock station. But yeah, punk is almost a dead scene now. The closest thing you'll find to Operation Ivy today is Green Day--and that isn't all that close a comparison.
What I wonder is, what about MY bands that are now THEIR bands? The first show I ever saw was the Red Hot Chili Peppers playing a college gym. If I go see them today, will I be the oldest guy there? Will the kids realize that I'm not posing as a youngster, I'm listening to the music I grew up with? I guess I don't care anyway--if the kids have taste, they can be at my generation's band's shows too. It's just too bad that a lot of the really great music won't get played live again.

Oh, yes. I was in the grocery store the other day, and all the tunes they played over the intercom were pop hits from ny junior high / high school years. Ex: "Pride (In the Name Of Love" by U2.
Scary. I remember making fun of the nostalgia compilations that used to be advertised for 70s music.
Now, I'm the target consumer for the nostalgia music.
It's a young man's game. But, then, the Stones are still going.

Dude I'm 40 years old, and have been listening to Punk since I was 14, and I feel like that just about every day, the cool thing is though, I took my 14 year old son to see "American Hardcore" and now he's into the old groups big time, so now it's pretty common for us to be tearing down the road listening to The Misfits, or Black Flag, or Bad Brains, etc. In fact, he's constantly picking my brain for names of old bands and cool songs from back in the day.

My nephew is 16 and has started playing guitar in a band. They play a Ramones song and think they're punk. I made him a compilation CD with songs by The Clash, Sex Pistols, early Tubes, Television, The Jam etc on it to give him some references. He wasn't that impressed, it made me feel really old!

I feel the SAME WAY. I also walk through stores and see all these clothes that we used to have to make ourselves!!! I cant believe that places are selling stuff like this. At one point it used to piss me off that it had gone mainstream, missing the total point of punk music...now I just think that just like how hippies came back when I was in school, now punk is back. We're old, but atleast we're 'in'.
