I wouldn't recommend a two stroke bike as you will more than likely just find racing dirt bikes. Even the enduros are 4 stroke which is much easier to learn on and more reliable in the long run IMHO.
But commuting on an enduro is alot harder on the body than a small street bike. Look at picking up a Japanese bike, not to new, around 350cc - 400cc. You'll save a bundle on gas. They are easy to maintain and parts are readily available from both dealers as well as online ie. Ebay. Look for an older Yamaha special. Kawasaki KZ400.
