Ask to strike a balance and see if he would be willing to purse his PHD part-time by taking night classes and continue to work his full-time job in the interim OR ask him to wait until he retires in a few years and pursue his PHD full-time.

it depends-----what will the Phd do for him? will it earn him more money etc? a Phd is a time consuming expensive endeavor. You both need to sit down and list the pros and cons of it---getting a Phd soley for the sake of having it--is not in my opinion a prudent move. If there are definite benefits however it may be the smart move. good luck

There arent that many things that you can reach for at this age, I mean kids and marriage are all done, and career, have a house. THis is a new goal, if you can handle it financially why not. Really why not?

You should encourage him. That's wonderful. Don't tell him he's too old.
