This has been a constant problem that we all face. There are ways to combat the sock monster though. None are perfect, for the monster shall always eventually win. The best way I have found is to always buy the same type of sock. I can get away with only white socks for everything, so I buy the same white socks. 20 pairs at a time. Then when I wash them, I don't have to worry about matches cause they all match. As long as I have two socks, they are going to match.
When I get down to only having 6 socks, time to go buy more socks.

Ways You Can Protect Yourself From The Sock Monster:

Always store your socks in pairs.

After you are done wearing them, always put them in the laundry hamper folded together.

Do not pile your laundry on top of your machines. The sock monster dwells in the dark places behind.

Before you start your wash, separate the socks so they wash and dry well.

When they come out, sort them into pairs folded together again, and store in drawer. If you are missing one, check inside of shirts or pants that were in the same load.

The sock monster can strike at any time, but the above tips should help keep it away.

Good luck, and I hope this helps! :)

My suspicion is that you have the dreaded "Washing Machine Monster" somewhere in your home.

Please be on the look-out for this creature. Usually it will lurk in the basement. Please keep an ample supply of socks available in order to appease it's appetite.

Good luck & keep your eyes peeled, as you never know when the Washing Machine Monster may change it's appetite, looking towards toes instead of just the socks.

Have a lovely rest of the day.

Maybe the monster on Lost stole them?

I do not know, but my Mom used to insist that I use a safety pin to pin the toes of my socks together and from then on I never lost one. Try it-it works for me.

Someone had a theory that when socks enter the drier, the spinning sends them to another dimension, which is why you put a pair in & only get one out. I forget who said it, or I would give them credit, but it was the best theory I've heard so far.

I think he is elusive, like the tooth fairy, sneaking around in the middle of the night, he seems to like childrens socks too. I've also heard that cats and dogs take them to play the underground sock market, trading them for various items.

I've always blamed it on golem, the monster that lives in your dryer. Somewhere there has got to be a huge pile of socks and lint, mostlikely in a paralel universe though.
