My youngest daughter sucks her thumb, and has done almost from the moment she was born!
It doesn't bother me, what does bother me is other peoples attitude towards it, especially the older generation, I have had people stop me in the street and tell me to buy her a dummy as its bad for her teeth! What business is it of theirs????
If she has a problem with teeth later on we will deal with that then, she is happy now, why upset the apple cart???
And I prefer it to a dummy, it never gets lost! ;-)

It's cute at first, but my daughter is almost three and still sucking her thumb. You should see the condition of the callous on her thumb where her teeth hit it. It's hideous. I even asked her doctor to help us break her of the habit; however, he completely undermined me and my husband in front of our child when he said, "Oh, the peer pressure when she gets into kindergarten will make her stop." Great, now we're stuck with a beautiful child who complains about the "boo boo" on her thumb--but won't stop sucking that thumb because the doctor said she doesn't have to until she gets into kindergarten.
By the way, if anyone thinks their kids don't pick up on this sort of thing, think again. My daughter actually repeated what the doctor said later in the day. Be careful what you say in front of a toddler.

I use to suck my thumb up to grade 4, it ruin the teeth, had braces, what made me stop was the braces. If by age 5, if they are still doing its a habit. Most kids stop by age 4 on their own. When their one through four, it's cute, but as they get older it looks stupid, and people will make fun of them.

I personally prefer my babies to suck a pacifier. That I can take away from them. A thumb I cannot. But, what can you do if they do start sucking their thumb? Not a whole heck of a lot, I assume. I mean, unless you put something on it that tastes nasty. My niece does suck her thumb though, (she's 2), and her teeth are crooked. I just hope that she stops before she gets her permanent teeth.

my best friend used to suck her tumb when she was little and when ever i would go over to play with her her thumb was always kinda gross. i guess she sucked it so much that the skin started to peel off. she's now 20 and her thumb is normal and she never needed braces or anything so i guess its not too much of a problem on the teeth part its just the skin if it is a consistant thing.

Both of my kids have sucked their thumbs since birth. They are 5 and 3. Their teeth are just fine and it makes them happy. I have no problem with it.

My daughter does. She's almost 2 and I would like to break this habit. Her thumb nail looks like it's about to fall off and I don't like her putting her dirty fingers in her mouth.
