It's significant as a show of mutual affection. But if you mean how important is it to do it "right", not at all. You're holding each other and your lips press together and hopefully sparks fly. Kisses get better with practice just like everything else. Don't worry about it, just let it happen.

For me, as a woman, it's everything.
A kiss means so much more than just a pleasurable physical contact between two juicy pair of lips. It's an exchange of emotional responses and it's much more intimate than having sex. When two people kiss, they lock hearts and not just lips. That's why the first kiss should be with someone you really, really like and who really, really likes you back.
