Yes, I have seen the movie. In 1969, Adams (Robin Williams) admits himself into a mental institution for suicidal depression. In the institute, he finds uncaring medical staff, not a good atmosphere for someone trying to get over depression. Adams finds his own cure-he helps other inmates laugh and find joy through playfulness. Christening himself Patch, Adams joins a medical school. He finds romantic love, faces expulsion and opens his own clinic.

The film tells the story of Hunter "Patch" Adams (portrayed by Robin Williams), a medical doctor who became famous for his unconventional approach to medicine. After a suicide attempt, Adams seeks psychiatric help and is institutionalized. During this time he is inspired to become a medical doctor, and discovers that he is able to forget his own problems by helping others. Two years later, he enrolls at Virginia Medical University and is the oldest first year student. He questions the school's approach to medical care, and clashes with the school's Dean Walcott (played by Bob Gunton) because of his belief in the necessity of personal interaction with patients. Because of this and other incidents, including a prank during a medical conference, he is dismissed from the school, although he is later reinstated.

I thought the movie was rank! He was tring to "redo" what we normally know as tranditional healthcare and bedside manor. Robin Williams ended up making him look like a dope. The real patch adams's antics cost someone their life. He was too much a clown to be a doctor. He had mental problems that weren't acknowledged in the movie version. He had no business practicing medicine.

It means going against the grain, not being normal or not being as expected.
Everyone assumes a doctor should be serious and clinical but Patch Adams goes against that he feels humor is just as important in recovery as the medicine he uses to treat a patient.
Plus if he relaxes the patient with humor, they're more receptive to treatment.

It is a great movie, Robin Williams is hilarious. It's about this middle age man who self-admits himself in a mental hospital, he then wants to leave and go to medical school...because he thinks in all cases getting to know the patient and making them feel better emotionaly helps them hang on physically.
That just means he was the odd ball out, he didn't dress accordingly screwed around...but he still made the grades. All the up tight professors just thought his methods were unconventional.

A man takes a different approach to medicine.
Intead of trying one way only, Patch is open to alternative directions

i've seen it, and i think the main theme is that if you want to pursue a job, you should be able to regardless of waht people say. he is studying to become a doctor and wants to start in peditrician then he opens his own doctor place so that he doesn't have to be told waht to do. all he wants to do is help people. its a really good movie. you should see it!
