Do I need to purchase Norton anti-virus every year? It seems like a major scam to me. Pop-ups keep telling me to renew my subscription or my system will not be protected. Is this a fact?

Yes Symantec makes you pay every year. I suggest dumping the Norton junk and use AVG free for anti-virus and Zone Alarm free edition for your firewall.

You do need to renew your subscription but you do not need to get the whole new Internet Security software. When you renew, you are given the option of renewing the subscription to your existing security or upgrading.

The message is misleading. You will still be protected, even if you don't renew, against all threats that were in existence when your subscription lapsed. But you wil not be protected against threats that have been identified since your subscription lapsed.
