here is a more detailed answer

a chipset consists normally of 2 chips, a northbridge and a southbridge. this concept is used by Intel chipsets. another manufacturer of chipsets is Nvidia, they used the same concept as Intel up to the version Nforce 3, from the Nforce 4 on they integrated all functionality in one single chip.

what does the northbridge do?
the northbridge is the "fast" part of the chipset. it communicates directly with the CPU (on top), with the Ram (on the right), with the graphics card (on the left) and with the southbridge (in the south). comments in parenthesis are given so you can better imagine. the vast majority of all data is transferred through the northbridge, from the ram to the CPU and back, from the CPU to the graphics card or from the ram directly to the graphics card.

what is the southbridge responsible for?
the southbridge controls all peripherals - hard disks, CD/DVD drive, sound, communication, ports (PCI, PCIe x1 & x4, USB, Firewire, PS/2, Parallel, Serial, IR, Bluetooth, RAID controller).

the chipset on a mobo is easy recognizable, these are the 2 largest chips beside the CPU and have a cooling device either separate or connected via a heatpipe.
this is an example of a mobo using a heatpipe

the northbridge is the one in the center, the southbridge is the one in the upper right.

Hi we cannot give you the full details but i can give you details as much as possible.

Since every body cannot manufactures all the mother boards so what happens is processors is mfg by Intel and it supporting chips are being mfg by Intel only so no other mfg will mfg processers so that is why we call it as Intel chip set MB and if you all the MB there will only the two chips are different on the board that is processer and supporting chip of the MB .
There are Intel chip set and via chip set and sis chip set there are the most popular brands.
