Let the question and answer be the surprise, not the reaction from planting a kiss on someone.
I'd never kiss someone without knowing what the reaction would be.

A French kiss for a first kiss would be bad for many reasons. A kiss should be to show affection. French kissing is something entirely different. Consider it the same as groping his crotch.
I also wouldn't recommend a "surprise" kiss for someone you're not even sure is gay. See if you can manage at least a hug first. That's somewhat safer as far as the future of your friendship is concerned and should be equally rewarding.
Save the kissing until you know for sure that there's some mutual affection. Kisses are nothing unless they're returned in kind.

awww! That's so cute. I wouldn't just IMMEDIATELY surprise kiss him. Be a little more sure he's gay. Try something more subtle like touching him first on the leg before you just go ahead and kiss him, and then go for the surprise kiss if he has no problem with you touching him. By the way, ignore the losers who answer you on this page who say 'leave the homo alone' and the guy who says he is a homophobe.' They are both ignorant losers.

I wouldn't surprise anyone with a french kiss, start with a surprise hug.
Although, I did surprise this one guy once. I was at The Eagle in Boston back when I was young and invincible. Got his phone number. LOL

TOO FURD:
I dont extremely agree. People STARTING to explore their sexuality at 16 is extremely better then having 10 14 yr olds walking around 6 months pregnate.
16 is a great age for exploration. It builds who you are, as long as your safe and not a hoe.
As for as the question at hand, ask him if he feels comfortable or would feel comfortable expiramenting with a guy, kissing ect. If he says he would, then lay a sloppy one on him!

Kissing anyone without their consent is potentialy a VERY BAD THING...If they dont feel the same way or like you then they could easily become defensive and you could loose a friend and worse, you could be charged with sexual harrasment.\
If you dont know if hes gay, strait or whatever, then dont mess with it. If you do that, you could have serious problems.
Research a little, and make sure he wants the same thing before you go for it.

surprise french kiss would be harder to explain as a surprise. I'd go for just a peck on the lips for now

If he is into it then kiss him. Try doing this. Do not define your self now. Try dating all sorts of people and finding out which person you feel most comfortable. Or just date and date and date until you fall in love. Then marry that person, guy, or girl. It does not matter one bit. Find a person to make you happy, make them happy.
Done Deal.

surprising a french kiss on him might turn out disastrous if he turns out to be straight, or is still unwilling to do that yet if he's new to being gay. talk to him first.

It would be good except for the fact that you both share the same equipment. You see we really were built to procreate and wanting to hook-up with the same sex goes against everything natural in the way you were built.
That is why gays are having so many issues is because they really are like fish that attempt to swim up stream.
