sport bikes 9x's out of 10 are so unforgiving, they will kill a rookie with the 1st mistake u make on a twisty road. they will do what the rider tells it to do instantly, even if the action will result in the bike puttin u down hard. sport bikes no bigger than 500cc's will still have enough ballz to kill u if u disrespect it, but is more forgiving than a 600 and up; remember that a water cooled bike will put out alot more power than an air cooled engine of the same size. a 750cc water cooled cruiser has just as much ballz as my 1200cc sportster on the takeoff roll. u will get urself killed inadvertently if u insist on getting a 600cc and up crotch rocket.
u'd be able to build up skills alot easier being on a cruiser. u should enjoy the ride, not tryin to slam it into 60 degree lean angles on the streets.

In my personal opinion - which I have formed after being a biker for more than 30 years - is that you should buy a sport bike as a first bike only if you have a death wish, or have this irresistable need to become a traffic statistic.
Sport bikes are powerful and extremely fast. They are also topheavy and hard to handle at slow speeds when ridden by an inexperienced rider.
I suggest you put your desire for a sport bike on "hold" for now, go buy yourself a cruiser, and learn to ride the right (spelled S-A-F-E) way first. Once you get some experience under your belt, trade the cruiser in and get a sport bike.

Blah blah blah, if you want a sportbike get one. You can get killed just as quickly on a cruiser as you can on a sportbike. The important thing to remember is to take it easy when your learning. I can't remember where I read the statistic but most bike accidents involve riders who have been riding for six months or less. You just have to be safe and ALWAYS respect the machine, as soon as you stop doing that is when your going to hit the pavement. As far as a bike for a bigger guy like you the Katana 600 may be the way to go. They haven't been redesigned in a long time but they're great bikes and there a bit bigger than most other sportbikes. The bad news for the tall people out there is that sportbikes are getting smaller and smaller. I saw an 07 GSXR1000 not long ago and if it didn't have the 1000 logo I would have sworn it was a 600.
Have fun and ride safe!

Sit on both types in the shops and see which feels the best for you,the people who say you shouldn't start on a sports bike just remember it only goes as fast as you want it to.PS you didn't say if there is a limit to the CC of the bikes you can ride because there is here in the UK.

Hey, I'm 6'2 and just got my first bike last April. Like yourself I am also a first time rider. I check out a few rides but the Kawasaki EX/Ninja 500 was a good fit for my body and my wallet. That might be a possible option for you. Its a great starter bike. A lil dated look but who cares, im just learning how to ride yano.

Why do you need a motorcycle that can beat a 'Vette in the quarter mile?......Just curious. If it were me...I would start with a cruiser and after I learned to ride move over to a sport bike.
No matter which you chose.....TAKE LESSONS THROUGH THE MOTORCYCLE SAFETY FOUNDATION COURSE......The only other way to learn to ride is the trial and error method....and you're not allowed too many errors on a motorcycle. The majority of accidents happen to people with less that 10,000 miles under their belts.
good luck and ride safe

If you're arms and legs are extra long then a long wheel base like the the Kawa ZX-14R might suit you. Suzuki Hayabusa 1400+cc is long too but might crimp a long limbed rider.
