so that the look doesnt get stale. Historically, they do it when the demand for a given body style begins to slump..so they introduce a new body style, or engine option, and people have a new interest in them.

For the same reason everything from Cheerios to shoe laces is often "new and improved". To increase sales. To have bragging rights. "Now with more horsepower and less weight!"

they want to appeal to different customers. Also they probably think that they can do better with a newly designed car.
