First of all love. Love is free. Is anything better than that?
But I can tell you something that happened to me yesterday that illustrate your question. I was driving home with my 5 years old daughter (we live in a farm in Brazil) yesterday morning and we saw in a tree outside a couple of Toucans Bird. It's amazing how we felt! We where so glad to see a specie like this that is so rare and almost in danger specie, flying free through the sky.
I agree "the best things in life are free", I hate to see people with bird in a cage been so egoistic! Love them and let it be free.
P.S - Forgive my terrible English!

The air you breathe, the sun-shine you bask under, the water you drink are all free gifts of Nature and not just to humans but to all species that exist in this world.
Whatever comes from Mother Nature is free--the trees, the oceans, the rivers, the stones and salts, the mountains, the sky, the clouds, and so on. The list is endless.
They are all, for sure, the best things in life and for life. Our survival and our strength depends so critically on them.
This is just one side of the coin. Now, turn the coin on the other side and you get a host of intangibles which are the very best in life and are absolutely free. See for yourself: love, friendship, help, service, relationships, wishes and desires, ambitions, emotions, feelings, and so. A MOTHER is a perfect model created by Nature to illustrate the 'best in life' which is got free but as a very super-precious gift. Those who do not have one do realize that they have missed out on the 'best' and the 'gracious and gratuitous'. A mother nurses for nine months with her own blood, rears the child with 'life sustaining nectar i.e., suckling, and perfect and unhesitating service. God bless a MOTHER--the most invaluable free gift of Nature--THE BEST AND FREE.

The love and desire between my wife and me; that's free. The lingerie and vids cost $, lol.
The simple beauty of a walk in the woods, or floating down the river on a sunny day; that's free. The beer or wine is extra.
Working in the garden, tilling, planting, tending or harvesting. Being at one with the Earth; that's free.
The satisfaction of having finished a job "well done."
The smile on the face of a child.
The gratitude in the fragile grip of an old person's hand.
I cannot pick one "best" thing...

Sunrise and sunsets are free, if you just look up to the sky.
Swimming in the sea is free.
Northern lights are free, if you are that north to see them.
If not, any starry summer sky is also free.
To watch the snowflakes is free too.
Hugging a baby is free, regardless of whose baby it is.
To read a great book, this could also be free if borrowed from a good friend who highly recommended it.
Taking a walk along the nice places of your home town is free.
To be kind and cheerful is free, it prizes you with a returned smile usually.
Most of all, to love and be loved is free:)

For me, it means that most of the things that matter in this life are free or doesnt cost anything material.
Some of the "best things" in my life that are absolutely free are:
-hugs and smiles that I receive from friends and loved ones everytime I'm sad or depressed.
-pats on my back
-trust that other people give to me
-faith in a supreme being
-music
-sky
-laughter
-tears of joy
-the sincere thanks and salamat that I receive from other people
-tomorrow.

Nothing is free. If something doesn't cost money, it may cost effort, even if the effort is only in thought, it is still a cost.
As far as the best things in life? Well, contentment I say is the BEST thing one can ever attain.

I think it means the things you over take for granted should be the things you value most . Examples. love...life... family...and your health because money is goin to always be around but the love of ur life will not if you let him go. The best thing to me is my boyfriend.

People with money tell us thing like this.
The best things in life are a roof over your head, clean food and water, and a loving partner to share it with. Unfortunately, none of these are free.
