If I have to pick three, these are the finest and the most notable roles/characters in which Tom Hanks played in a movie:
1. Forrest Gump - (1994 / Forrest Gump)
2. Chuck Noland - (2000 / Cast Away)
3. Josh - (1988 / Big)

Seeing as the guy purchased a Bang & Olufsen system from my father a few years ago I should be careful - repeat business and all that! (Yes, I am showing off! Sorry!)
It's a tough call - Forrest Gump was certainly a great movie and he played a very believable and moving character... Big was a comedy classic, but I must say, I very much liked his Joe Fox character in You've Got Mail!

I like him in Money Pit... ;-D Just kidding...although I did laugh my butt off at the part where their bathtub falls through the floor and he does this great, forced guffaw laugh...I was rollin'.
Anyway, in all seriousness, I'd have to say Forrest Gump was his best character because his acting was great and full of innocence. He had to construct that character out of his imagination because it really hadn't been done before, thus nobody to imitate.
Of course, the fact that the movie itself and its message were great helped a lot. I love the moral of that movie..."Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're gonna get." If everyone would remember that when times are tough or when your life takes an unexpected turn, we would all be much happier. Roll with it, it's all a journey to make you into the completely unique individual that you're destined to become; a sum of ALL of your experiences, both the easy ones AND the challenging ones.
Embrace the possibilities.
God bless.
