I have one computer upstairs and I'm about to get another computer for downstairs. The one upstairs has a dsl connection. Can I use a wireless router to give my downstairs computer the same dsl connection? Is the router all I will need to buy? Thanks in advance.

If I choose not to go wireless, is there a way to connect the downstairs cpu to the upstairs 1 with only 1 cable/wire?

As long as you have a wireless nic (Internet card) in the second computer you can do this.

A wireless router should allow you to use a computer downstairs on the DSL connection upstairs. Just remember that wireless is slower than if you are on a cable.

You will need two things - a wireless router to broadcast the signal, and a wireless card in the PC/laptop to receive the signal. Recommend that you purchase the same brand of router and card as they will be easier to configure with heach other.

You would disconnect the network cable from the back of your current PC, and connect it into the "upload" port of the router. Run a second cable from the router to the PC. Run the setup CD that comes with the router to configure it. Once that is done, install the wireless card in the second computer. Run the CD that comes with it and it will hook you up to the DSL modem wirelessly.

Once done, you will not only be able to have both computers on the Internet at once, but be able to share files, printers, etc. between the computers.

if you don't need to go wireless then go wired because it will give you a faster connection speed and it only requires running a cable round the skirting board and down the stairs. Yes you will need a router with at least two ethernet ports or if you want wireless downstairs then you need a wireless card to go in the pc downstairs to connect to the wireless router.

In my dad's office he has two computers one is on a DSL hard wired connection and the other is on a wireless one. I have a remote access one that uses the same 2 Wire home Portal device, but via wifi. (I'm upstairs in an entire different location)So you need to make sure your new computer has a NIC in it and you also need to make sure the router is compatible with the new pc. =o)
Good luck!

Hmm, that would desire to be the router growing to be older, getting into and out does not sound commonly used. what sort of information superhighway provider do you get? in case you propose that the prompt will drop out in many cases, then that is extra possibly to be a router concern, so if the potential isn't throwing in the towel, i could evaluate getting a sparkling router.
