I moved away from the UK to marry the love of my life, I can name 10 things, because it's not until you leave your country of birth that you appreciate it!!
1 the weather, four different and distinctive seasons each with their own beauty
2 Wages, you can earn decent money in the UK, where I live the cost of living is the same as UK but the earnings are appalling
3 health care Not every country has up to date medical facilities, if I have a car accident or a serious illness here, I probably wont survive
4 Choice. you can buy everything and at very cheap prices
5 politeness British people are very polite especially in shops, I'm lucky if I'm even acknowledged
6 Education - UK has excellent education system compared to many other countries
7 Pension schemes - non existent where I live
8 Food - every kind imaginable and in abundance
9 Good road networks
10 You can travel anywhere in the world from the UK and it's cheap, i have to pay 5 times as much
Don't knock living in the UK,, it's a great country. Live in eastern europe for a while and you'll be gagging to get back to your home comforts. I'd go back tomorrow if my husband would come with me!!!

There's loads of great things about the UK! Well to start with there's me...Haha just kidding. Really though, there are a lot of great things. Show some patriotism. Things might be bad right now but they'll get better and there's no reason to blame it on our lovely little country! =) Believe me, I live abroad at the moment so I can appreciate the things from home.
Ok here's my ten:
1) British humour - we're the only ones that really understand sarcasm.
2) British TV - you miss it when you're gone! Trust me! =P
3) Good food.
4) Beautiful countrysides and fantastic cities.
5) We have a lot of culture and history that can be appreciated
6) Good shops!
7) Friendly people
8) British music...think Queen, The Who, Pink Floyd...the list goes on...
9) The cinema and basically just the fact that everything's in English. It makes things a lot easier to live somewhere where they speak your native language.
10) It's home!
There's a lot more than that too! You just have to learn to appreciate it!

You can leave.
You don't have to make decisions for yourself (the government does that for you).
You can buy family guy season one for 15 pounds.
You don't require an education to actually leave school.
You get to smoke when you are 16.
You never have to blame yourself for your actions (there is always society to blame).
You can be overweight but still classed as average.
You can get into the guiness book of records for hospital waiting times (it has been done before by the good old British)
You can get pregnant when you are 13 and society will support you for doing nothing.
You can always blame the public transport for being late for work.

I will say this one thing, tongue in cheek, without Great Britain, there wouldn't be a US or this country wouldn't have found something revolting about that.
Another thing is that one quarter of my bloodline came here from Devonshire about 1870. How can I complain about Britain?
By the way, don't be embarrassed. You sound like you have a dream, you are working towards.

Busy pace of London and the great cultural opportunities. A finely charged debating culture. Lots of media. Beautiful countryside. The foods actually not that bad. Lots to read. That's about it.

Well as an American, I have to thank GB for their pioneering role in creating representative democracy ( which our system is based on, a common law justice system (another US import), the UK's steadfast loyalty to the US in foreign affairs, splendid tea (love it), AbFab (funny show), the BBC (one of the best news orgs. out there), a wonderfully dry sense of humor, double-decker buses ( wish we had those here), numerous scolars, philosophers, scientists, etc. ( John Locke, stephen Hawking, etc.) who have advanced the knowledge of all, the list goes on. Maybe those things don't help you're financial situation ( good luck my friend) but they are things to be proud of ( in this man's opinion at least).

I'm sorry that you're just barely scraping by. I know how it is. I'm from the US, but I can still think of plenty of great things about Great Britain. They are listed here, not necessarily in order of importance:
1.Ricky Jervais
2.the Beatles
3.the Rolling Stones
4.Led Zeppelin
5.Pink Floyd
6.the Magna Carta
7.Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament
8. England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland
9.Helen Mirren
10.Anthony Hopkins
I hope this helped.:)
