To my way of thinking, an intellectual is an intelligent person who is interested in things involving the mind ... ethics, politics, religion, sociology, literature, the arts, psychology ......

A pseudo-intellectual is a person who pretends interest in such things for a purpose other than the love of inquiry, and in addition is not intelligent.

To the gal above, we news people have to be that way so we don't get things wrong. That would be horrible if we did, as people depend on us to keep them informed. Thanks!

Generally, an intellectual doesn't need to prove how much they know, whereas a pseudo-intellectual does.

Intellectual - knows what he/she is talking about, does RESEARCH before he/she comments, has decent credentials (degree, etc), and is well-spoken.

Pseudo-intellectual, well, it's harder to describe, but here's some examples I've encountered in real life, both at work and college:
*the 19-year old motormouth who thinks she's a genius because she can understand about half of what's being said in Japanese anime without subtitles
*the guy who replicates big words without knowing what the fcuk they mean
*a girl who calls herself an atheist, yet doesn't know sh!t about science
*the guy at the office who sent an enormous, 8 paragraph memos at work so they can impress others with their writing skills
*I've met many college, and even high school drop outs, who can't shut up about political, economic, or scientific issues

An Intellectual knows his/her subject matter well, questions when discussing
subject matter with which he is not familiar, and will admit when a topic is new to him/her.
A pseudo-intellectual knows how act , as if he knows his subject matter, when in fact he is putting out a bunch of convincing bull.
(News is an education in itself, and news people are definitely intellectuals.)
