Isn't that how Australia was founded to begin with, from a prison colony? Iraq would be a great place to start another colony...kill two birds with one stone.

The Prison Governor of an Arizona Prison put the prisoners in bright pink suits and made them clear the rubbish from roadsides. I thought that was a brilliant idea because no so called 'hard man' or some guy who thinks he is 'cool' can live down that experience! Yes! I say let's make them do something other than sit and watch television or go to the gym!

Here in North Carolina I pass prisoners most days picking up litter on the interstate (=motorway). Some work gangs repair roads. They also make all the car license plates for the state and individual prisons have commercially-viable businesses. In most cases, the prisoners do not get much more than regular prison wages.
As for outsourcing the prisons, I find the idea amusing. If the UK and USA can outsource skilled labour, why can't we outsource the semi-skilled and unskilled ones? Maybe they won't come back...

In my view prisoners should be made to work, and at least 8 hours a day too, why can't they make the prisoners pedal dynamo's to produce electricity, or have the government make such things as prison farms to grow our veg, or prison factories to produce plastics or other everyday items ?, and if they don't want to work then send them off to Siberia for a month or two.
Britain is fast becoming a soft touch, all these human rights campaigners who shout out for prisoners rights have probably never been attacked, or burgled or abused by someone?, yet they expect us to just sit back and let these people get off lightly when they commit a crime, its a terrible state we are in :-(

I'm not too sure whether we should farm out our prison service. In my opinion, we should make prisoners work for a living rather than relying on tax payers to provide everything for them. There are many menial jobs that could be tackled by the offenders.

because if we sent them to India where conditions in prisons are different to ours it would cause serious problems such as visiting rights the way to do it long term is to increase sentences so 10 years means 10 years that way it would be a real deterrent and make people think twice before committing a crime
As regards recycling that is a brilliant idea

I think you have the germ of a good idea. We could have a very exciting tariff where criminals would receive the same punishment but would serve their sentences in jails in El Salvador, Angola or Iraq.
