Mostly our upbringing. You are a product of your own environment. If you have parents that love and care about your well being, they won't hit you, call you names, and do things to diminish your self esteem. Your parents are the #1 factor

Not sure if there's a specific #1 factor. I would think parents have the most influence over self-esteem, but I know someone who grew up with two loving parents always praising him and saying how great he was and he has low self-esteem.

Maybe it comes from a variety of factors; parents, brothers and sisters, peers, and the genetic makeup of the person.

appearance and education!

When someone is upset about the way they look it really effects their outlook on things. For instance my best friend is going bald and he wont go places that I will go to for example the club, you can not wear hats there and when I ask him to go he refuses and that embarrasses him and makes him feel low. Also at a work place, if you are on the lower end job and have to speak to someone of higher power that also impacts your outlook on things. When all of this adds up day in and day out a nervous breakdown occurs. When people realize that no one else should care or have an effect on their life, things will be alot more easier to get through.

Negative thinking. Listening to other people. Not making and completing goals. Not counting our blessings; thankful for what we are. Not realizing that we are very blessed to be unique enough not to share our exact experiences with another person. Dwelling in the past. Worrying about what we think is wrong instead of trying to do something about it.

Peer Pressure and being popular, youre constantly around people who are putting you down, there looking at your clothes, not your kindness, there looking at how old your moms car is, and not your big heart.

Other people who are very important in your life. Such as a mother or father and or grandparents who belittle you.

Believing that you need to look like what society tells you to look like. Not just realizing that you are who you are and you can't change it. You need to learn to accept and love it.
