No but I know plenty of people who do that, there is a simple reason I don't (or would do freelance) but anyway...
There is a standard fee for them to show up, I want to say the Geek Squad charges $50 but I'm not sure about that. Then there is either an hourly charge or charge per problem based on how long they are there. Also, most of these places are not authorized to take the computer with them if they can't fix it in your home so you will have to take it to the store and possibly repeat what the Geek Squad (or whoever) told you.
I wouldn't use the Geek Squad, provided you aren't computer literate (can't fix it yourself). I would call Geeks On Call, they might charge more but then they aren't going to try and fix a faulty IDE cable with a new power supply like the Geek Squad tried to do.
Geeks on Call, http://www.geeksoncall.com/ but please please please, AVOID the Geek Squad like the plauge, avoids them, I say, AVOID!!!
I'd call the neighborhood computer guru first (probably a teen or someone in his/her early to mid-20s), chances are you will be able to satisfy them with a nice lunch somewhere.

Usually there is a fixed hourly rate with a pre-set minimum. The rate varies depending on the individual you choose to do the work. You can expect to pay anywhere from $25-50 an hour, and usually there is a house call fee.
I once had a call where the guy said his monitor wasn't working. I went over and after a 1 minute check of his computer found that he had forced the cable into his computer and bent the pins. I straightened out the pins, plugged in the monitor and it worked fine. I had to charge him $20 for the 2 minutes I spent there.

The typical technician charges a base rate just for coming over, usually around 20-40 dollars.
The hourly rate is generally from 25-65 dollars an hour, most problems are solved in about 15 minutes or less, but that doesnt mean it wont take longer to fix.
It is expensive, but it also depends who you call. Check your computer literate friends first.

Most commercial firms have their rates posted depending on what service is provided.
If you KNOW what you want them to do, there is usually a fixed price for it (like installing software or setting up a network).
If you want them to "make it work" when it's broken, there will probably be a minimum charge, just like a plumber when your toilet is clogged.
Places like the Geek Squad are the external subsidiary of Best Buy, so they may have an agenda that is not in your best interest.
Call them for an estimate before you ask them to come out. If you can take it in (like a laptop) for diagnostic work (tell you what's wrong but don't fix it without approval to proceed), that can be quicker.

in keeping with what you're saying. it is hard to be sure what the concern is. you probably did not say whether you're utilising extreme velocity or dial or on the spot. in case you're utilising a on the spot cyber web, it would desire to be sign barrier concern. in case you're utilising extreme velocity, it would desire to be undercover agent ware concern, if dial up, might desire to be bandwidth concern. in case you have been utilising you laptop ok before. i don't think of it is laptop concern. Modem potential surge concern is likewise a probability.
