The Upper Pennisula of Michigan? If so, what do you think about the place?

I have been to the U.P. before. I didn't like it at all. Seemed that the people that lived there were living in a box and had no idea about the rest of the country. Also, I saw very little diversity there and that was a little disturbing to me.

I was stationed at K.I. Sawyer up near Gwinn and if you don't mind shoveling snow 7 months out of the year and being isolated from society it is a great place.

I live up here and I LOVE IT. Actually, yesterday I had a truck driver come in and he was from Texas and he sat there and complained to me about how he didn't see a McDonalds for 50 miles, or any fast food and about how he sees one school and it doesn't say if it's a high school or grade school. I told him that it may have been both. Not all towns are like that, but the small towns are. I told him, that's why we like it, hardly no people, lots of forests, and hardly any crime. IF you like the outdoors, then this is a grat place to live, and you don't mind the cold (the wind chill was -21 this morning). I call the U.P. God's country!!

You're right, the U.P. is very isolated, and they don't seem to care much about the rest of the country. Both the area and the people have more in common with northern Wisconsin and western Ontario than with the rest of Michigan.

That said, I love the forest and waterside scenery, and I certainly wouldn't hesitate to go back there. People in a lot of places are very provincial; the U.P. is no exception.

Hi....I lived in the U.P. during my teen and college years. My parents still own a business in the central U.P. I think your stereotype may be true for some people in the smaller towns but I think you are off base for the most part.....Just because people live simply, doesn't mean they are ignorant. And as for diversity....it's rugged land that gets a lot of snow....People CHOOSE to live there. It isn't for everyone.
