I have a 97 grand am and noticed today the cooling fan would not shut off when i turned the car off. The car was not overheating, and the ac/heater was off. I turned the car on and off a few times. I was thinking of taking the battery connection off but dont have the tools with me. Wondering if anyone knew why this would be happening?

It was the relay switch. Looks kinda burnt. Thanks for the answers.

sensor is still picking up heat, relay is stuck, or ground has shorted from the fan. Find the fuse, usually under the hood now, and remove it to stop fan.
You try tapping the relay, if you can locate it (often in the fuse box). but it is something that needs to get fixed, or start carrying jumper cables with you.

On some cars they don't immediately go off with the key, but will continue to run for a bit until the temperature of the coolant drops below a certain level. So the first thing to do is not panic, but give it some time. If you go back 45 minutes and it's still running, then is the time to look into a possible problem.
If that's the case for you, there are really only a couple of things it could be. There will be a sensor somewhere that reads the temperature of the coolant and tells it when to switch on. It will have wires plugged into it and could be any of a number of places but most likely on the radiator. It can go bad. The other possibility is the relay stuck in the on position. It is usually with the master fuses, the box under the hood. To keep your battery from being drained until you can get it fixed you can pull that relay (it just plugs in) to stop the fan, but don't forget to put it back when you drive it to the shop to get it fixed or you could overheat.

It is normal for the cooling fans to run on for a few minutes after the vehicle has been turned off. If the fans NEVER shut down you may have a faulty fan control sensing unit.

Cooling fan relay is sticking on. Disconnect relay and replace simple to do

Could be a engine temp. sensor failure,or bad relay.
