The movie version is a great adaptation of the stage version. I grew up listening to the Original B'way Cast soundtrack so I went in expecting to be bored by the movie's pitiful attempt at the Tony award winning show. I also doubted seriously whether Jennifer Hudson could hold a candle to Jennifer Holliday's Tony Award winning performance. I will be the first to admit it. I was wrong, wrong, wrong.
I live in NYC and was able to catch the show at the Ziegfeld. The movie is beautifully done. Even if this is the first time you're hearing this music and meeting these characters, it's sure to be 2 hours well spent.
The casting and direction are spot on. Beyonce, Anika Noni Rose, and Jamie Foxx are great. Jennifer Hudson is worthy of worship. The best part of the movie is Eddie Murphy. His character's story and development are beyond brilliant.
It's important to remember:
1) This is a musical. So, it's good to go in with at least an appreciation for musicals.
2) The first half of the movie (Act 1) is all about high energy, fun. The second half delves into the characters more. You learn a lot more about them and are taken on a much more in depth journey.
So, enjoy. If nothing more, see it for what's sure to be Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy's Oscar winning performances.

For the most part I liked it. However, by the end of the movie, I was cringing every time Jennifer Hudson started to sing. Yes, she's got a great voice - but it was really starting to annoy me!

I didn't see what was all the rave about. It wasn't that serious... It's just another movie. However Jennifer Hudson did a good job with the singing.Wait until it comes out on HBO.

I would never watch ANYTHING that had Beyonce in it. I think she is a sell-out and I'm sick of her. Everybody is soo sold on her, but I'm not. There's nothing faboulous about her. She's a crackhead like the rest of the Hollywood crowd.
P.S. I'd love to know what her REAL hair looks like under that weave.
