I always tell egotistical bores to send their ego's on holiday, try this, the reaction from them is well worth it!!! Also worth knowing is that being egotistical is a definite sign of insecurity, their egos are far more fragile than you think. These people are really trying to convince themselves that they are great, they are to be pitied.

Not really. I know people who have repeatedly suffered from their huge egos and are now old, bitter and lonely but never thought to deal with the ego. Some people say that ego is caused by not enough love as a child, but that is part of the victim mentality in many schools of thought in modern psychology. I personally think egotistic people are brining that mind from a previous life and must suffer terribly before they can realize the value of others.

There is, however, something I think does help though. That is Alcoholics Anonymous or other 12 step program groups, because they all center around the idea that selfishness and egotism (which is nothing but selfishness, really) will truly kill one and must be fought against by devotion to what they call a "higher power", taking responsibility for the pain they have caused others, and by submiting oneself to the service of others. However, that does not cure an egotistical person--it only reduces the symptoms a great deal and the practice must be maintained for the entire lifetime.

If somone around you is causing you pain by their egotism, you have not alternative but to get away from time or fill their house with murthy of Durga.

Justagran had some important psycho-mechanics in his/her answer to be considered. The caveat would be, unless I missed something, his/her answer unnecessarily assigned gender, and may have misassigned motive. The solution is not in your control, unless you want to sincerely express your concern, and have the courage to experience the response.
Without artifice, egoistic people do possess boudaries for their own protection, and sometime don't appreciate their impact of trespassing others boundaries. You establish your own as been advised. Egoism can be manifested, both, in ways that are harmful and beneficial. Harmful egoism is for the inner work of the person exhibiting the same, and the inner work may come, outside of your control, by the person when it becomes a conscious impediment to that person's development. Otherwise, keep your boundaries not allowing the actions of the other to put their hands on the steering wheel of your ship of life. That is solely within your control.

egostic people should be ignored when they show start showing signs of egoism. be normal with them at other times, so they'll come to know that you dont like them only when they're egoistic. if u mean anything to them, they'd probably, but slowly drop their ego.

Why, so they can let you in so you can do some damage?
If you don't like someone, don't associate with them, but it takes effort to change the way someone is so why would you want to be with someone so loathsome for so long? Especially when he/she doesn't want to change, hes/shes happy you aren't, you can change the way you relate to him/her much easier than you can change someone else.
Its justagrandma so I'm female and when I speak about another I usually use him/he simply as an opposite. So thanks for reminding me, I have added a /her to my response. I also think several people are confusing ego with conceit.

No! They won't change for you. Why would you want them to change? If you are friends with an egotistical person then either accept them for how they are or move on.
