I'm afraid I disagree with a number of responses here.

Distilled water's pH is THEORETICALLY 7.0, however, it does not have enough electrolytes for it to be accurately measured.

Salt water's pH varies with the salts used to make it, especially if they are salts capable of buffering. The pH of SEA WATER is usually around 8.3. (so 7 to 6.5 is wrong)

So what's "regular water"? Tap water? That depends on the water quality - how much chlorine? whether the water itself has been pH adjusted for corrosion control... Tap water is usually around 7.5-8. Below 7.5 and it gets corrosive. Above 8.5 and hardness starts ppt'ing out.

So be aware that your answer will depend on what's going on in the water source of interest...

Yes,adding salt to distilled water will help things float on it. The salt raises the density of water by adding more mass to the same volume of it. For example, adding 4 tsps. of salt to one cup of water will raise its density .You can do an experiment to prove it, all you have to do is find something that doesn't float, example, egg, and then add 4-5 tsp. salt to one cup water and it will float. Only the amount of salt required for the process must be taken care of. You don't need to worry about change of density due to evaporation of water. Just make sure that your room temperature doesn't exceed 25 degree celsius. Also, addition of solute (here, salt) to a pure solvent (here, distilled water) reduces its volatility, i.e ease of evaporation.
