Yes. Never use irrational arguments when rational ones will do. And yes, of course it would be bad to call people such names. Not only because it makes no sense, but also because you're implying that it is their race which makes them act that way. Take, for example, the stereotypical white racist: "Damn N----, stop [doing something inappropriate or illegal]". The very act of combining a racial slur with a misdemeanor implies that you consider them linked.

I don't know the context or content of the slur, but do you think your violence decreased his/her intolerance/hate? The high road is to walk away, (It's safer too.)

Yes, just because it's just words, it's not like he's threatening you, and he isn't your boyfriend, you know someone you are closed to that they respect you even doing something like slapping them. Be care full with that, because there are men who retaliate and hit anyone, anyone!
