i am going to purchase a loxker for my jeep and i am going to get a detroit but i cannot fugure out why i would by a full time locker. i commute with my jeep so i think a selectable or a limited slip is the way to go any advice about this would be nice.

Auto lockers can be a real pain. The driven wheel shifts back and forth on the road causing handling problems and you can break both back wheels loose when you really don't want to. Limited slips can also cause you to lose the rear end on curves and usually involve clutches that wear out relatively fast. I like the selectable lockers a lot better.

I am not sure about the wording of your question, but a limited slip and Detroit locker are two different things.
The locker is so called because of its locking motion, there are cog teeth cut into the two halves of the carrier, when required these teeth mesh together with a clunk (locking) the differential carrier solid.
A limited slip works by applying pressure to small clutch packs that are situated on the axle shaft output pinion gears, tying them to the carrier.
As for which way to go I would think the limited slip type is plenty sufficient for a commuter vehicle.
The locker is a serious duty unit that is most likely way more than you need for a few off road treks.

the best way to go if you commute more than you off-road is getting a selectable locker, that way when its "off" it has no adverse affect on the jeep on the street, but when you need it, its just a click away.

the OX locker is operated by a push-pull system
the ARB is air operated

both are great lockers, Eaton(the makers of the Detroit locker) have an electric locker that goes from limited-slip to full lock, instead of fully open to full lock like the other two
