South Koreans are not particularly well known for their gratitude|

Perhaps what exceeds that is their lack of common sense|

They want re-unification with the North|

I have no idea if this is really the case, but I'd find it hard to believe, too.
But here is my theory as to why:

After McArthur's daring landing at Inchon, which turned around what appeared to be a nearly hopeless situation around Pusan, the North Koreans began a northward escape.
McArthur correctly pushed our guys to pursue the retreating North Koreans, but made a strategic blunder by ignoring Chinese warnings to stay away from their border.
We were so close to having the whole Korean peninsula sewn up, but the involvement of the Chinese changed the picture completely.
The fresh and previously uninvolved Chinese troops boiled over the border, and overwhelmed our cold and tiring Marines.
They pushed us back south around Seoul, with things settling down to an odd sort of trench warfare stalemate until 1953, when hostilities ceased. A tense border along the 38th parallel was established, dividing Korea into a Communist north and democratic south to this day.
