My 21st Birthday is on Fat Tuesday so I have to celebrate Mardi Gras but my mom wants to go to Vegas and I want to go to New Orleans.

If you want the real Mardi Gras experiance go to New Orleans you will have more fun there. Any Mardi Gras celebrations in Vegas are cheesy, corporate sponsored, and put on by the casinos. The parades and floats will not even compare to New Orleans. During Mardi Gras the whole city of New Orleans is partying, any celebrations in Vegas will be confined to a small portion of the Strip. Las Vegas is a very fun and exciting city, but it's also cheesy and tacky and there is nothing to it beyond the strip worth seeing. New Orleans is full of different sights to see during the day and there is so much more history and culture to that city than Vegas. The strip can get old pretty quick. Also don't believe all those negative media reports or stereotypes about New Orleans, the city is perfectly safe, especially the tourist areas. As long as you stay out of the ghetto you will be just as safe as in Vegas. I can even describe how much fun and exciting going to a real Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans is. Grabbing a 30 pack from Rite Aid and posting up on the parade route and catching beads is so much fun and the people are great down there, so down to earth and in good spirits. You can go to Vegas any weekend of the year and it wont be that much different than Mardi Gras if at all, but in New Orleans you will experiance something great and that comes only once a year. The people of NOLA are great and any visitors they get helps in their recovery. Go to www.NOLA.com and check out all of the info and pictures from the current Mardi Gras and previous ones. They've already had several parades so you can get a picture of what the floats and parades will be like. The five days before Fat Tuesday are so much fun, trust me go to New Orleans and you will not regret it and will have the best time.

Mardi Gras is a good time to go anywhere but New Orleans. I grew up in NOLA. Mardi Gras used to be fun. Now, it's crazy, dangerous, and out of control. As a New Orleans native, I agree with your mom. Go to Vegas.

New Orleans would be better, but since Katrina, I don't know.
I say go to Las Vegas now, and in seven years your birthday will be on the same day. By that time New Orleans should be all patched up.

NEW ORLEANS!!!! MARDI GRAS IS GREAT!!!! IT IS FANTASTIC!!!! AND THERE WILL BE OTHER CHANCES TO GO TO LAS VEGAS!!! IF I WERE YOU, I WOULD GO TO NEW ORLEANS!!!! HURRICANE KATRINA DID NOT STOP THE PEOPLE FROM NEW ORLEANS FROM MAKING MARDI GRAS THE BEST HOLIDAY EVER!!
