Wow, doumo huh. You have to live in Japan to understand it fully.
They use it in so many ways.
it can used like doumo arigatou (thank you 'very much')
or doumo sumimasen ('I am 'so' sorry.)

Basically just pop it in front of a sentence to make yourself more formal/sincere.
Even just the word itself, like when you see someone you can just nod and say doumo, that means 'thanks' or even just 'hello' in a polite way.

There is no exact translation, its just a very polite word.
I once heard an adult friend say 'doumo doumo sumimasen' and I thought that's strange why is he saying 'thanks thanks sorry' but I came to realize that he said 'gee I'm so sorry about that' in a polite yet casual way.
PS. there is also a grammar point like doumo wakarimasen ga... (I dont know why, but...)

Yeah Cyn is correct. (BTW, 442 Best Answers?? Wow you're good!)
There are many meanings depending on the situation that it's used.
"Ara Doumo" will mean one of 2 things.
1) Oh thank you / Oh thanks
2) Oh Hello there / Oh Hi.

"Doumo" is a very ambiguous word.
It can be used as a greeting or an expression of gratitude.
Also it can mean something like "It seems to be...." or "I get the impression that...." when used in a phrase.
For example "Doumo kanojo wa kono ryouri ga kirai no you da."
Meaning - "I have a feeling she doesn't like this dish"
A synonym in this case will be "Douyara".

♡It *depends on the situation, I think.
In Japanese 'doumo' has a few meanings depending on how it's used. After living here more than 9 years I figured that out!
The otofu yasan saw me pass by the other day and he said 'Ara doumo M chan!' In *this case, it meant 'Oh hello!'. But it could mean other things as well...
Just my opinion here...hope his helps.♡

I'm guessing "oh, thank you" as if you are pleasantly surprised by someone's kindness?
