We have had body parts, people jumping out, all the normal halloween things. It is hard to scare people on a hay ride. I need some really scary ideas for a hay ride and our haunted walk.

#1 rule to scaring a group of people: Misdirection

Get them to focus on something that they expect to be scary and then let the scary come from another direction.

Examples:

I worked at a place that had this. The group would walk by a coffin. Of course they expect the coffin to open up and something jump out at them. The coffin would then creak and then open up but there is nothing in it but a sign that said "Out to Lunch". The crowd is wondering what this means and have not noticed the fake wall behind them has opened up and the monster crew are there. That one got so many people it was great.

Next up, and this was on a hay ride. The wagon comes up on a guy by the side of a building. He is just sitting there looking demonic and laughing. This goes on for about five to ten seconds. The crowd is starting to anticipate this guy doing something, when a body on the end of a rope is dropped in the distance between the guy and the wagon. The hanging body drops to block the view of the laughing guy and the people on the wagon. At the same instant, a loud scream comes from the other side of the wagon. We first tried to use a real woman screaming but her voice gave out after the first night (yep, we were brilliant) so we had to rig up a speaker. This one works because the people are focused on the laughing guy and did not notice the people going to drop the body. This same effect would work with a flying demon or some other wire guided thing. Just be careful not to get it too close to the people on the wagon or the laughing guy.

I will ride everything but the Drop Zone stunt tower at Kings Island. It's a circular disk that sits at the bottom of a 315 foot tower. You sit in a position on the edge of the disk with your feet dangling, so all you have to secure you is shoulder bars. The disk slowly turns as it goes up until it comes to the top of the tower and stops. You sit up there for 5-7 seconds and suddenly a latch releases and drops you to the ground in 3 seconds at 61 mph with no warning. It scares the living hell out of me. Millennium Force scared me when I first rode it, it was my first gigacoaster (MF is 310 feet high, and the highest coaster I'd been on before that was 148 feet), so naturally I freaked out when I saw how high up we were going. But I stayed on, and it's my favorite coaster now, lol.
