The reccommended dose is 1x 400 microgram tablet a day as soon as you start trying to conceive, continue this until the end of the 3rd month of pregnancy. It's also good to eat foods that are rich in folic acid such as brussel sprouts, spinach, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, green beans, cauliflower peas and parsnips!
Good luck!!!

Folic acid contains the ingredient/vitmain that allows the body to produce new cells throughly. It is reccommended whilst trying to concieve and up to at least 3 months into pregnancy, helping avoiding Spina bifida dramatically, which is where the cells of the spine dont form correctly, often resulting in spinal deformalities.
So if your taking it and your not pregnant, rest assured that the levels you're taking in will help aid the succesful growth and cell combination in early pregnancy when it occurs. Otherwise your body will use it naturally anyway, and you'll notice cuts and grazes heal alot faster. I have taken Folic acid since nov, as were TTC with noavail yet, still we don't loose hope.

Yes it is, Pregnant women or women wishing to become pregnant are advised to increase their intake of folic acid about twice the average daily intake. This can be achieved by increasing the consumption of foods which are naturally rich in folates, foods fortified with folic acid, and by starting to take a folic acid supplement.

It is essential! First you want to start your body off in it's best possible health you can before becoming pregnant. Secondly, folic acid helps decrease spinal cord and neurological deformities. Both of these systems develop before most women even know they are pregnant. So have the folic acid in your system before you conceive is the best way to prevent such defects as spina bifida and other neurological defects.
The RDA of folic acid is 400 micrograms daily, and not more than 1000 micrograms.

Yes, you SHOULD be taking it if you are trying to get pregnant because when you get pregnant you won't know about it for the first few weeks, but the neural tube is developed in the first 28 days, so if you wait until you get a positive test, then it's pretty much too late.
You should take folic acid for at least the first 12 weeks of pregnancy although ideally throughout pregnancy.
The best thing is to take a good pregnancy multi vitamin and mineral daily throughout your pregnancy as it's very easy to be deficient in minerals such as iodine and selenium and to not realise.

Yes, it is advised if you are actually planning for a baby to begin taking it a few months in advance anyway so your body is ready with the right nutrients. Folic acid is important for the early development that takes place in the foetus. Buy one of the well known pregnancy vitamins as they contain all the correct doses of all recommended nutrients for before & during your pregnancy.

Yes, definately. They say to take it before you get pregnant.. Even if you aren't going to get pregnant, it is ok to take. If you take a prenatal vitamin (also OK to take if you are not pregnant) then it has enough in it, but some recommend to take the prenata and then another folic acid pill with it especially if you have a poor diet.

Yes it should be fine, will help your body build up a decent level of folic acid for when you do become pregnant. A very important thing to take for mothers to be to help decrease the chances of spina bifida and other disorders.
Hope you get lucky soon :o)
