When accelerating or "pumping" as it is sometimes called. Put one foot with your toe facing the direction you are traveling and use the other foot to push off the ground to gain speed. After you have reached the desired speed put both feet on the board in a direction you would call horizontally.

First, make sure and buy trucks that are at least two inches wider than your deck. Then balance with one foot on the board and kick the top of your front wheel repeatedly in rapid succession. This technique is called the Choo-Choo and is used by most top professionals like Bam Hawk and Kelly Slater.

The alternative is to thow your board out in front of you, chase after it, and then jump on really fast. When you master this technique, you will be ready to ride "rad style" with your arms straight and vertical.
