Please can someone help me choose a language for my university course. I got an A* in Spanish and an A* in German GCSEs last year. I am also doing russian this year (I'm in my first year of 6th form) and I'm trying to choose a language to do with spanish at uni (to study Modern Languages and I need to study 2 to do so). It's not that I'm ambivalent to choice and that I don't care which I do as long as I do spanish, but I was wondering which languages would go well with it (I don't do french, as I didn't do it for GCSE, so I don't think I can start it from scratch). I neither want to do German or Russian, as I want to try a new language instead. Could anyone help me with which language would go well with Spanish and why? Thank you so much for anybody's help xx

It depends on what you want to do with your languages ultimately.
The easiest language to pick from scratch, having studied Spanish at school is, without a doubt, Italian as the two are closely interrelated. Several of my students have picked it up at Uni. and have gone into careers that range from teaching to the travel industry, marketing (abroad), and international business. The advice given by Caikos Turkey above is sound if you are not terribly interested in Literature and want a modern "with it" approach to languages. My own son took the European Studies course at Bath combining French and Italian (the latter from scratch as he had done German like you) with Politics and Economics. He now sells robots all over the world, but did have to refresh his German as it is spoken in many ex-iron curtain countries. If you want to do languages and business studies, think about UCL and Royal Holloway which are centres of excellence.
Look on the link I give you below and you can compare courses.

If you definitely want to do two languages and you like linguistics, literature and phonetics, go for the more traditional and long established universities.
Good luck!

The trouble is, when you get to university you will find the language departments grouped in families of languages. If you won't do French (and it is very difficult to do from scratch), then the best option for you would be Portuguese. You would find it very easy to learn. Another option would be Italian.

Have you thought of not taking a degree in modern languages, but combining your Spanish with, say, business studies? You might find this a far more useful option for your future career. Do look at the courses offered by the universities you like the look of and give this some thought. I attach a link which I hope will assist. http://www.bath.ac.uk/prospectus/undergrad/esml/

Sounds daft - but I'm doing Spanish with English language (linguistics). It's actually really cool.

But Italian is very similar if you are definately doing a foreign langauge - buena suerte
